Sir Douglas Bader

Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War. He was credited with 22 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged.

The story goes that, after World War II, he was giving a speech about his experiences at a posh London girl's school. At one point he said,

“So there were two of the fokkers behind me, three fokkers to my right, another fokker on the left…”

At this point, the girls were starting to giggle and the headmistress panicked. She got up and interrupted his talk and told the students, “I think you should know, girls, that the "Fokker" was a type of German plane that was flown during the war. Isn't that right, Group Captain?”

Bader replied: “Well, I'm not exactly sure about that, ma'am, but THESE fokkers were flying Messerschmitts!”
