Johnny Weissmuller was born 112 years ago today. A childhood hero of mine, he won five Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze for water polo. He won fifty-two U.S. National Championships, and set more than fifty world records. Something a lot of people don’t know, however, is that Weissmuller never lost a single race during the entirety of his competitive career.
After retiring from competition swimming, he became the 6th (and best-known) actor to portray Tarzan, a role he played in twelve motion pictures. His iconic Tarzan Yell is still recognizable today.
