Diving with Sharks - an Experience of a Lifetime

I just got back from a week-long scuba vacation in Roatán, an island off the coast of Honduras. I was there with my son, Will, along with my great friend Jodi Cahn (who was celebrating her birthday with her entire family!). We did 18 dives in total and spent over 13 hours underwater!

On Friday (our last day of diving), we got to dive with Caribbean Reef Sharks. Not only were we able to watch them, we actually got to swim among them!

Contrary to what most people believe, sharks don't target human beings. In spite of what you might see on "Shark Week," less than 10 people are killed annually by sharks worldwide, while 11,417 sharks are killed every hour by humans, mostly for "shark fin soup." Shark fishermen will catch the sharks and cut off their fins, then throw the animal back into the water to die.  This infographic gives you an idea of how large a number that is.  It adds up to 100 million sharks killed every year - a number that far exceeds what many populations need to recover.
