Some of the Lesser-Known Golf Terms

A collection of names, phrases, words, clichés and expressions used to describe bad golf shots. Memorize a few golf sayings then recite some of these on the the golf course.

An Anna Kournikova - When you hit a golf shot that looks great, but unlikely to be a good result.

A Bill Clinton - When you can't remember which hole you played last.

A Bobby Darin – a Splish Splash - When you hit a golf shot into the water.

A Brazilian - A putt that shaves both sides of the hole.

A Britney Spears - Looks pretty but has all kinds of trouble

A Bud Light - A golf shot that is very close to water.

A Cold Shower - When a putt goes in and out quickly.

A Condom - When you hit a golf shot that didn’t feel very good but it is safe.

A Darth Vader - A wicked slicer

An Elton John - A big bender that lips the rim.

An Enron - A suspicious score submission, lack of accounting skills 

A Flusher -
A putt that swirls around the hole before going down.

A Giraffe's Ass - It's high and it stinks.

A Glenn Miller - Kept low and didn't make it over the water.

An Imodium - When you hit a golf shot that just keeps running and running and running.

A John F. Kennedy Jr. - When you hit a golf shot that didn't make it over the water.

A Kobe Bryant - When you get caught failing to record an 'away' score on your handicap.

A Linda Ronstadt - (Blue Bayou)  blew by you - a longer drive than previous hitter(s)

A Mother-in-law - When you hit a golf shot that looked good leaving.

A Mother-in-law putt - Nothing but lip.

An OJ Simpson - When you hit a bad golf shot and somehow get away with it.

An Onion - Hitting a golf shot that makes you cry.

A Princess Grace - You should have taken a driver.

A Raisin Bran - Two scoops – amount of divot mix required to fill the divot hole.

A Rodney King - Over clubbed

A Rush Limbaugh - When you hit a golf shot too far to the right.

A Salman Rushdie - An impossible read.

A Scud - A shot with questionable accuracy.

A Snowman - When you score an 8 on a hole.

A Son-in-law - When you hit a golf shot that turns out a whole lot better than you ever thought it would.

A Sonny Bono - When you hit your shot straight into the trees.

A Sophia Loren - When you hit a golf shot that looks good for a very long time.

A Ted Kennedy - When you hit a golf ball off a bridge into the water.

A Therman Munson - When you hit a golf shot that is a dead yank.

A Tim Horton - a double, double (two double bogeys in a row).

A Toupee - When you take a divot large enough that you could wear it.

A Twiggy - When you hit a golf shot that is a very thinly hit shot .

A Willie Nelson - On the road again. When you hit a golf ball onto a road or path.

A Woodpecker - When you hit an errant shot into the woods that bounces off a few trees, and makes a noise similar to the bird of the same name.


A Yasser Arafat - When you hit a golf shot that is ugly and in the sand.
